This Pousada de Santiago do Cacem is located in a typical Alentejo farm estate, a few minutes from Santiago do Cacem and the Sao Vicente Coast beaches. It has a beautiful chapel and it is encircled in a magnificent landscape crossed by a refreshing river, terraced gardens and a swimming pool are located where the former watering reservoir used to be. This Pousada's concept is based on its peaceful rural atmosphere, altough there are interesting cultural-historic sites nearby, such as Santiago castle or the Mirobriga Roman ruins, the largest and most complete ruins South of the Tagus river.

History of Santiago do Cacem: Although the concept of this Pousada is based in the nature's peace, for more interested people there also are historical attractions, like the Santiago Castle , or re Roman Ruins of Mirobriga, considered the widest and most complete of the south of Portugal.
The council of Santiago de Cacem, typical region of Estremadura is characterized by the finest views over the sea, the mountains, the lagoons, the dams and the up hills, everything amazes the imagination.
There are beaches with a big extension of sand, bathed at one side by the calm waters of the Santo Andre Lagoon, and at the other by the Atlantic waves. During summer, there are many visitors.The archaeological vestiges exposed in this region reflect the human presence since the Palaeolithic, when man kind lived in caves and from what we would hunt with very rudimentary utensils.
The Santiago Castle , constructed by the Muslims during the 8th century (in the first half of the Middle Ages), was named Cassen, maybe in honour of some moiro alcayde. It was reconstructed on 1186 by the friars and militaries of the Santiago de Espada Order, with seat in the Palmela Castle. By then it was given by D. Sancho I the village category, becoming occupied by the friars.
Between 1190 and 1191, still in D. Sancho I monarchy, the Arab Al-Mansor attacked the Peninsula and conquered agaig its command from Algarve until the Tejo river. The Warrior Monks Order of Santiago de Espada only gets the Castle back on the year of 1217. With the end of the Christian attempt to conquer the south territory of Portugal , in de D. Afonso II kingdom, started the reconstruction of the castle. The Arabian castle succeeded the important roman Mirobriga, which was abandoned in the 5th century, and by then the habitants preferred living in the hill in front of the castle, founding a village the constructed their new castle.
Another important reference is that was in Santiago that the first car - Panhard Et Levassor – arrived to Portugal, it was property of the 3rd Count of Avillez.
The S. Pedro Chapel from the 16th century, right in the Discovery Era, is characterized by simple elements, without any reference of the art of that time. In the Senhora do Monte Chapel there is a fair called "Feira do Monte" (the mountain fair) in the religious holidays and festivities in honour of this saint. In one of the hills that surround Santiago de Cacem exists a mill where it's possible to enjoy a wonderful view over the city and everything else until the ocean.Finally, it's important to mention that the train arrival in Santiago was an important issue of the village's evolution because it turned it possible to contact the exterior. The railways building, with its Estado Novo architecture is one of the notable monuments of the city.
