Pousadas

Fantastic, marvellous etc – thank you!!!
Every pousada was perfect  - location, room, service etc. Branganca was spectacular and we really enjoyed the surrounding area. We kept thinking they all cannot be the same standard but they were.
The roads were all great including the secondary ones, the people great, the food excellent – in fact everything was perfect and we will be planning next year 9or later this year) in the very near future.
One point worthy of mention re Viano do Castello – tell your guests it is worth paying the small additional charge for a room at the front with balcony. I think it cost E34 extra but the view was breathtaking.
Lastly I have to mention the wonderful service provided by you in arranging things right up to the last minute. Your patience and consideration was outstanding.
Many thanks and very best regards,
David Jarrold (UK) 30 June 2008

Pousada Sta Marinha - Dear Diana, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Pousada Sta Marinha. The hotel was exactly what we expected from your promotional material and the rooms had been booked exactly as specified which was wonderful. The car hire was easy and charged at a competitive rate. We don't have a single complaint and found Distinctive Portugal to be more reasonably priced than all the other websites we explored. We hope to return to Portugal next Summer and will be booking our holiday through Distinctive Portugal.Thank you for your help. Best, Jo Mallabar (England) August 2010

Dear Diana. Having just returned from another wonderful holiday in Portugal I wanted to thank you again for all your excellent arrangements. Booking the standard rooms was wise as I was able to pay for an upgrade in one or two hotels where it was worthwhile and so got the best of all worlds. The only mistake I made was following the schedule below and going to Manteigas when I should have been in Almeida! Totally my fault but the hotels were very good in changing the arrangements! We are now looking forward to next year to visit Lisbon and surrounds possibly also going down to the Algarve. Will be in touch next year!! Very best regards and again many thanks.
David Jarrold (England) June 2009

Sorry I haven't contacted you since our return home from Portugal. I have sent you the picture we took of us with you when we met up with you. The pousada at Solar da Rede was our favourite. It was gorgeous and we loved our rooms and the whole atmosphere. We had supper in the pousada and then on Wednesday, we went to Quinta da Pacheca and had a wonderful experience there. The second vineyard was Quinta do Tedo- not as appealing. We all felt that we loved the north better than the south and Bob and I definitely will be back to Portugal. We would like more information about villas for a number of people. thanks again

Villas

Villa 223

We spent the week of our life: superb Quinta, with charm bedrooms and sumptuous countryside.
You cannot dream best place on earth to spend a week. Nice view on the montains, incredible Quinta on top of a hill, great commodities (tennis, swimming pool, huge garden...). The organisation and the service were also exceptional: great activities (canoe, kart, massages) and imbelievable sense of the service. We had our wedding during this week and Diana kindly found for us the best place ever for a sunday brunch.Precious help, warm welcome, availibility, what else can we say to express the high level quality of this week? Thank You a 1000 times!!!! Marie and Nicolas (France), 28th of August 2010 "Noivos" (DESTINATION WEDDING)

I have been thinking of you many times! Finally, I stopped myself to write an e-mail. After my holidays I have been in full speed at work and tonight it is 1st time at my home to play with computer and to start writing.... We have very very nice memories from your beautifull place, we had chance to visit.
Thanks a lot for your excellent and welcoming friendly services. Villa was perfect for our team, very much over of our expectations. The Cooks were fantastic , the food was extremely delicious. I cannot find right words to express myself, but I am trying to say that it was worth to visit and all of us had same opioin - we may come back one day. Please, pass my greetings to owner of the Villa as well as the cooks.
All of my friends have been promoting the place and your professional friendly services to take care of us! I have feeling that you will get some inquiries from Finland in near future.
Thanks a lot and I am passing greetings from all of us to you.
Ystävällisin Terveisin

Dear Diane,
Just a quick note before I get busy and forget. Thank you so much for your true professionalism, honesty and consideration in your dealings with the 10 couples at villa 223.. You were wonderful to work with and it was a pleasure to meet both you and your husband. The group loved the villa and it was so kind of you to have some breakfast goodies waiting for us.I can tell you that I will highly recommend Distinctive Portugal to any of my friends or fellow travelers. Please do not hesitate to use me as a reference. Thank You again
Pam Ricks (Lexington, Virginia) October 2008

Hi Diana, We really enjoyed our stay at your villa and your beautiful country. Thank you again for everything you did for our group... I will take a look at your attached villas and get back to you...
Have a great weekend, Rick MacSwain (Edmonton, Canada) June 2008

Villa 202

The stay was great and I would highly recommend it. The booking procedure was fine and ran smoothly. Our only complaint were the instructions of how to get to the villa were incorrect. We ended up having to get in touch with the owner who was extremely helpful and a great guy. We have stayed in villas around the world and this one rates in the top 3 in our experience. The setting, the architecture, the furniture and the well equipped kitchen were second to none. The fresh bread delivery each morning was a nice touch. My only suggestion is to get a new BBQ. For those looking for a quiet, remote, and inspiring location, this is it! We wouldn't hesitate to rent it again when we return to Portugal. Carlos Ventin (Canada) June 2010

Villa 201

Dear Mr. Monteiro, We both would like to thank you for this real distinctive offer from Portugal.  We both enjoyed our staying in the, as you said us at the arrival, the real Portugal.  We are delighted by the high quality of our staying in the Casa Moranguiero, the high standard of the villa and all the facilities we found in the villa, the extraordinary environment and the magnificent surroundings.
We did visit the small towns as you told us and discovered "the real Portugal" and the breathtaking nature.  We did not only found the villa that you promissed but also the autenticity of the extremely beautiness of the Minho region. From 2 extremely satisfied customers from Belgium. Warmest regards. Roger Leyssens (Belgium) May 2007
PS which villa's would you propose in the same quality level for a next stay in Portugal?

Villa 206

Dear Diana, Sergio and Co, Sorry for the delay in sending you this note - although our trip to Portugal seems to be already far away I would like to say on behalf of my family that we had a wonderful time (perhaps even the best holiday ever!) so thank you very much to all of you for your help and to the owner for allowing us to stay at her superb domain and most particularly a big thank you to Rosa who was so kind with us. I have already taken the liberty to forward your details on to one of my friends and who knows we might be in touch next year! From all of us from Ireland, France and Tahiti, With very warm regards, Anne Thompson (Ireland) August 2010

Dear Diana, Villa 206 was wonderful - spacious, clean and comfortable and beautifully equipped -  and we loved all the fresh flowers and fruit and veg! The booking process was efficient and straightforward.
Thank you so much for all your help - we are recommending you to all our friends!
Sarah Crawford (England) – July 2010

Hi Diana, As i mentioned at the time - we had a wonderful stay, the property was fantastic, and exceeded any hopes/expectations we had... The only suggestion I could offer for improvement is that the gates did occasionally cause a problem with various people coming and going at different times, and also even just not being possible to hear the buzzer depending on where you are in the house. it was also impossible to simply open them from the inside without the buzzer, which also made things more awkward. if there was some kind of manual override to leave them like regular gates, or alternatively if people on the inside could open them, and there was a keypad on the outside so that you could tell the guests the number when they come - I think that would work well... the only other thing is that the set of pool balls does not match the table I think - (there are an American size and a European size and I think that they have the wrong set (American I think) because they barely fit in the pockets !) this should be able to be easily remedied by picking up a smaller set of balls. Again - these are tiny complaints - but they are the only things whatsoever I can think of ! everything else was perfect, and there were lovely touches like the welcome basket etc.  Also wanted to say that the cook was fantastic - we were very happy with her & actually got her to come again another night - great suggestion - thanks! All the best. Thanks.
Feilim Deffely (Ireland) – June 2009

Just a note to thank you for my wonderful week in Portugal.
The villa was a gem, my room was of five star quality, and the panoramic view was a delight to wake up to every morning. I understand that my sister and her husband have already passed on their appreciation, and are talking about booking a return visit to Portugal through you.
I had a most enjoyable Saturday in Porto , and will no doubt return there for a weekend in the future - to continue my Port tasting...
Because I left early Saturday morning, I missed the chance to thank Rosa personally for her obvious kindness and thoughtfulness during my stay. Thank you both once again for an excellent week - you really are quite a find, and I'll certainly pass on your details to my friends and colleagues.
Paul Sutherland (UK) 29 Sept 2007

Just a short note to thank you both for all your help and welcome during our visit to Portugal last week. I am sorry I missed you on the first night but thanks for making the first arrivals feel very welcome. We had a great holiday, the villa was terrific and we found the area very peaceful.
Please also pass our thanks to Rosa ...she was great. Not only called in every couple of days to make sure everything was ok but came bearing gifts as well. Thanks again... all the family were delighted with the villa and are already suggesting I should organise something similar soon.

Villa 219

Hi Diana. Just to say that we found the whole experience wonderful.  Booking was straightforward and prompt in response time.  Sl issue with paying over the phone with the credit card but all the people we spoke to bent over backwards to help. The villa was fantastic – definitely one of the best we’ve every stayed in and we have already recommended it to our friends.  The welcome was thorough and helpful and booking the activities was easy and you offered a wide choice of things to do. So all praise and no criticisms! Best wishes Suzy Holden (England) August 2010

Here is our comments: "We are 17 persons from Finland and spent one week at villa 219 on June 2010. We found northern Portugal very relaxing and beautiful place to spend your vacation. The weather was perfect, although nights were slightly cool. The villa was beautiful and exciting place to stay. We don't have a bad word about anything concerning cleanliness, equipment, rooms, surroundings etc. It was nice that there were several refridgerators, so that there were enough room for food for 17 persons. There was even a ping pong board that was not mentioned on the web page. We used that a lot. The pool was also great and big enough for our group. There was a lot to do and places to visit, so one week felt a little too short a time. We visited the market in Barcelos and wine festival in Ponte de Lima. Porto is also a must-see. We went to wine tasting at Ferrera which was very nice. We also tried the cook and horse riding and enjoyed very much. Horse riding was best for those who have ridden before. The booking and everyting with the payment went easily. We received great help when we could not first find the villa when it was dark on our arrival time. We can recommend the villa and Distinctive Portugal to anyone." Regards. Liisa Tyventö (Finland) – June 2010

Thank you very much for your help re villa 219. We had a lovely three weeks and loved the location of the property and the garden/grounds and pool area.
Many thanks once again for all your help and kindness. You do a really good job and helped to make our holiday such a huge success. We really love the area and enjoyed our travels down to Pinhao etc however Ponte de Lima really is a very special town and we apprciated how lucky we were to be in that area!
Sue ( UK ) 28 Aug 2007

We enjoyed our holiday very much. We found the booking procedure, administration, directions to the villa and information at the villa very good. The villa itself was excellent. As it was so old and unusual it would have been interesting to learn about its history!
We would recommend the villa and Distinctive Portugal.
Best regards
Kay ( UK ) 11 July 2007

Hello Diana, Thank you for your help in organising our recent stay at Villa 219.
We were all impressed by the accommodation, and we particularly enjoyed the two evenings with the cooks. Opinion was divided about which was the better, but we would recommend either of them to any future guests, without hesitation. The service, efficiency and quality of food were excellent in both cases, and for our party worked out at under 15 euros per person on both occasions. One problem has arisen today. A friend has informed me that she left a nice pair of pyjamas at the villa. If they have been found, can they be returned to me by post, please? We will, of course, pay the postage costs. Best regards,
Malcolm Finney (England) – June 2007

Dear Diana,
Firstly I would like to thank you for forwarding my cheque for breakages deposit which I received on Monday. And secondly, I would like to thank you for your efforts at making our holiday a really successful one. The villa was fantastic with more than enough space for all. The pool and tennis court where great and we made great use of them - most suffered from muscle aches for days. I would like to suggest (not complain), if I may, that installing a couple of music systems, one for the house and one by the pool - is needed for such a large property. We also found that the pool table is not a pool table but a billiards table which is a completely different game. We are all pool lovers so this was a bit of a disappointment, but far from ruined our holiday. As I said, they are not complaints but suggestions as we immensely enjoyed our stay and hope to return in the near future. Kind regards. Nicole Brandt (England) August 2008

Dear Diana. I just wanted to thank you for your wonderful attention during our week (26th Jul to 2nd Aug) in villa 219.  The villa was beautiful and we appreciated the owner not charging us for the parasol (which we didn’t feel was our fault) and the pool cleaner (which was our fault).  So please pass on our thanks and sincere appreciation. I also wanted to apologise for leaving the rubbish.  I didn’t notice it until I left and by that time the cars were waiting for me by the gate, so for that I am sorry.I didn’t lock the front door as I wasn’t sure where to put the key, but you said the owner would arrive shortly after our departure, so I hope everything was OK? I certainly hope we will book again in the future.  I have also recommended both the villa and Distinctive Portugal to my friends. Thanks Diana. Kind regards, Charlotte Price (UK) August 2009 and August 2010

Villa 310 and Côa Valley Archaeological Park

Diana - Just a quick note to let you know that we loved the visit to Foz Coa! Thank you once again for making the booking for us. Kirsten Embree (Canada, Ottawa) July 2010

A perfect house, beautiful view and spectacular region! Luisa is the best! Thanks for the nice breakfast every morning! Rob Emmaneel (Netherlands) 7 August 2009

Villa 212 was beautiful - the setting was wonderful and the owners were very hospitable and helpful. The house was immaculate and the bedrooms were superb although there were a few problems with some of the showers (broken hoses). We really enjoyed the marvellous meal cooked by the chef, but it would have been useful to have a few smaller pans for our own use as most were huge!. The tennis court and pool were in excellent condition (a couple of sunbeds probably need replacing) and the grounds were delightful. We would love to come back again some time! Best Wishes, The Crawfords and the Briers (England) - August 2010

We just arrived back from Portugal to even worse welsh weather, and had a fantastic time, massage was lovely also. i just want to say the cook was fantastic and the villa if out of this world.  I really think the pictures you show on your web page don't do the villa justice at all, because it was amazing. we will definately be booking this villa again with you.
many thanks again"
Donna Evenns (Wales) 18 Jun 2008

Just to thank you for your recommendation of villa 212 , It proved an excellent choice for a one off family gathering, the location was superb and the villa and amenities were first class and well beyond our expectations. Thank you for your kind assistance and also to Carlos for his warm welcome.
I would have no hesitation in recommending your company and look forward to returning to Northern Portugal in the future. Yours sincerely
Lowe and family (England) May 2007

Hi Diana. I stayed in villa 212 from 17th July to 29th July.I may have left a pair of reading glasses there. I was in the 1st bedroom on right on the top floor.they may have fallen out of my bag and rolled in behind the chair or drawers immediately inside the door.would it be possible to ask Carlos’s Mum would she look for me.Thank you so much. We had a wonderful holiday  in the villa and we would definitely go back. The villa is amazing and the swimming pool also. The people are so friendly especially to the children. The horse riding was the highlight for my grand children. We are recommending this villa to all our friends with families. Kind Regards, Valerie Nolan (Ireland) July 2008

Hi Diana, I just wanted to say a huge thank you for all your help for our trip to Portugal. We had such a fabulous time at the  vineyard & the meal out was YUM. I will definitely recommend to people.

----------

Thanks for your follow-through, and your efforts on our behalf. We did enjoy our travels in Portugal . We found the people friendly, and some of the places truly beautiful.
Our favorite places were the island of Madeira , the Douro River region, and Sintra. We were not particularly impressed with either Lisbon or Oporto , but we really didn't give the cities any time, either.
We loved the people, the accomodations, and the incredible restaurant at the Pousada QueLuz, but it was a bit difficult getting into Lisbon from there. Sintra was wonderful, and we could spend more time there. We found some beautiful azulejos there, and even went to the factory of Vuelva Lamego (I'm not sure I got the spelling right) outside of town. That was a big highlight for Julie, as she was disappointed with the selection in Sevilla, and really wanted to find some tile sets. And going to the factory store is more satisfying (and less expensive) than buying from the tourist shops in Sintra. But to be fair to Sintra, there was a good variety of shops, and one shop in particular offered a very broad selection of azulejos, but it had to order them from the factory and then ship to the buyer, which would have been much more costly. This way, we packed the tile sets in our baggage, and took them on the plane.
Madeira was particularly dramatic at night with all the lights, and we had a lovely dinner up behind Funchal at one of the skewered-meat restaurants.
It was recommended by one of the guys at the car rental agency, and it was our most enjoyable meal in Madeira .
There are two important things we would do differently next time, though.
1) New Year's in Madeira . For New Year's, it's very hard to get to Funchal from outside town, unless you go late afternoon or early evening and spend the entire time in Funchal. We couldn't get a taxi to town after dinner, and finding a parking place for our rental car there was even more hopeless. So New Year's was a complete bust for us. We were very unhappy about that. Some of the more enterprising Portuguese did find a way to get to town and saw the fireworks, but it was not easy. Next time, I would pay the extra amount and stay in Funchal. I would also avoid having a gala dinner/dance with a group of people on a package tour, and try instead to book a reservation at a fine restaurant for the pre-fireworks dinner.
Package tours are just not for us, we now realize, especially with a group of people who don't speak much of our language. Doing the Madeira trip right, however, would have cost a lot more money, but would have avoided the disappointment.
2) Douro wineries. The Douro area is spectacularly beautiful, in an almost primeval way. We want to visit there again. The pousada was quite wonderful, although enough out of the way that you pretty much wanted to have dinner there, since the roads are so treacherous to Regua, especially that time of year. We did visit the Vintage House Hotel and had a lovely lunch there. Off season, it's not too expensive, so if we had had more time, we would have wanted to stay there as well. We did tour that one winery you proposed, at the very end of the day, and had a good time there.
For the future, we would want to plan the winery visits much more carefully, and have that all clearly set up in advance. We were disappointed that we couldn't taste at more wineries. It was not the best time of year, as many wineries are only open during high tourist season.
We fantasize about renting a house in the Douro for a week with another couple or two, and really exploring the region. But if we're tasting, who will drive the car on those narrow, winding roads? We would need a small tank....
So those are my thoughts right now.
Best regards
